Building Your Life Resume…Passion For The Process
The other day, I was listening to one of my favorite Podcast “The Model Health Show” by Shawn Stevenson. He had a guest on by the name of Jesse Itzler and they were talking about building your life resume. There were a lot of other great nuggets, but this was one of the things that stood out to me. During the podcast, Jesse made a statement saying that as people we often spend time building our career resumes, but we really don’t spend time building our life resume. While working and listening, I said to myself, what exactly does that mean? Isn’t part of your life resume, your work resume? He goes on to talk about his four buckets and if things are not moving the needle on that it’s a waste of time. His buckets were: Wellness, Personal, Family and Causes that he is passionate about.
Well of course now, I’m thinking about my life resume and my buckets. I had such ahha moment or should I say, this sounds very familiar moment. I love how God or some people may say the universe; keeps bringing things back around until you get it or until it finally truly resonate in your spirit. Jesse also stated how you have to have the passion for the process. Now I can relate to the process in so many ways. As a formal athlete there was a process to becoming a great athlete, an all-star softball player or MVP basketball player oh...yes yall I got some great accolades as a student-athlete. Ok, I digress, the process. Doing conditioning, hours of practice are the work I put into achieving those things, that was the process. When I was working out 5-6 days a week with my virtual training Khaliah, hours at the gym building my muscles and doing cardio to lean out, eating the right food was all part of the process. The process is the driving force, it’s the late nights, commitment, focus. I remember when I finally fell in love with both of those processes, I had the passion for it and the end results were some incredible gains and experiences.
Having the passion for the process is what is needed as I continue to pursue and live out my dreams, which are actually realities as being an actress, producer, and filmmaker. Boy is it a process, the not knowing, the auditions, callbacks, admin plans, rehearsals, and the list go on and on. But I have a choice, I can have a passion for the process and do the work and not just the end goal or I can only have passion for the end goal. I'll tell you, if I don't lean into the process, it will be a long, hard and daunting road.
My takeaway to Jesse point on the passion for the process and building your life resumes. Is that you have to truly enjoy the journey, mark the things that happen in your life, celebrate them. The journey is what makes up the experiences, the memories. It’s not only when you get a promotion at your job or that big break. But it’s that trip you took, the time you spent with your friends, the work you put into that project, it’s the experiences. Don't rush through life checking to do boxes and doing things that don't move the needle. Figure out what you are passionate about, what makes your life whole and just do it. Celebrate it!
There was a point in my life, that I said thank you God for everything. I found a park, thank you, God. I woke up, thank you, God. I didn't have to wait in line, thank you, God. It didn't matter how big or small, I celebrated it. I had passion for whatever I was doing at that moment and marked it with thanksgiving.
Back to the buckets, if I had to say what my buckets are, it consists of Wellness (mental and physical health), Personal (career goal), Family (my current and one day my own) and Friends (people who love and support me and nourish my soul). So when I think about building my life resume, it makes me say, I have to invest in myself, create my causative routine to do the things I love and have passion throughout each of the processes. Make the moments count.
If you haven’t thought about your life resume or your buckets…take a moment and think about it. Figure out what your buckets are and do the things that move the needle. It’s a process, so continue at it, but if we fall in love or have a passion for the process we are building our life resume.
